Seasonal Fishing in Estonia: What to Catch and When
Fishing in Estonia is a seasonal activity, and each season has its own characteristics. Knowing what fish to catch and when can give you significantly better results.
Spring (March–May) is one of the best times for fishing. The ice melts and fish become active. April and May offer excellent pike and perch fishing in shallower lakes. In spring, fish move closer to shore to feed, making it a great time to set your nets.
Summer (June–August) brings warm waters and plenty of activity. Summer is the best time for catching bream, pikeperch, and roach. We recommend setting nets early in the morning or late in the evening when water temperatures are lower and fish are more active. During summer months, use nets with larger mesh sizes (55–70mm) because the fish are bigger.
Autumn (September–November) is many anglers' favorite season. September and October are especially good for salmon and sea trout in the Baltic Sea. In autumn, fish gather in schools and move to deeper waters, so it's worth setting nets deeper.
Winter (December–February) is the time for ice fishing. This requires special equipment and experience. In winter, anglers mainly catch perch, vendace, and pike. Shorter nets (up to 30m) are suitable for ice fishing.
Important: always check current fishing restrictions! Some species have closed seasons when fishing for them is prohibited.
